Online ADHD Assessment: How It Works, and Whether It Is as Good

October 17, 2026

Online ADHD Assessment

The most common question we get about online assessment is whether it is a lesser version of the real thing. It is a fair question, and the answer is no - but with two genuine exceptions worth knowing before you book.

A remote assessment is the same clinical process. Only the room changes.

What actually happens

You complete questionnaires and a medical history beforehand, then attend a video appointment with a clinician. They take you through a structured clinical interview, covering your symptoms now, your childhood, and the effect on your daily life.

Afterwards you receive a written diagnostic report and, if appropriate, a letter to your GP. The process is the same as it would be in a consulting room, because the assessment is a conversation rather than an examination. Our patient journey page sets out each stage in order.

Is it as reliable as in person?

For adult ADHD assessment, yes. The diagnosis rests on a structured interview, your history and information from people who know you; none of which requires being in the same room.

That is not a marketing position. Remote assessment became standard practice across UK mental health services some years ago and has stayed standard because it works.

Where online is genuinely better

  • You are assessed at home, where your difficulties actually show up
  • No travel, no parking, no half-day off work
  • Easier to involve a parent or partner who lives elsewhere
  • Appointments are usually available sooner
  • Less daunting if waiting rooms are difficult for you

The two exceptions

Online assessment suits most adults. It suits two groups less well.

The first is children and young people, where observation matters more and a parent is usually central to the process; see our child and teen ADHD service. The second is anyone with a complex picture: significant co-occurring mental health difficulties, or a history that is hard to piece together remotely. In both cases we would say so rather than take the booking.

What do you need for the appointment?

  • A device with a camera and a stable connection
  • A private space where you can speak freely for up to 90 minutes
  • Any school reports or old records you can find, though these are not essential
  • Someone who knew you as a child available to contribute, if possible

What it costs

Our online adult ADHD assessment is priced the same as our in-person assessment; you are not paying less for a lesser service, and you are not paying more for convenience.

Check what any clinic includes before comparing prices. The questions that matter are whether the written report and the GP letter are included, and what happens to the fee if you are not diagnosed. We set out the full picture in our guide to the cost of an ADHD assessment in the UK.

Will my GP accept a remote diagnosis?

Acceptance depends on the quality of the assessment and the report, not on whether it happened over video. A GP reviewing a report is looking at which criteria were applied and what evidence supports them.

Where a GP does hesitate, it is almost always about the thoroughness of the assessment rather than the medium. That is worth knowing when you compare very cheap online providers against clinics that take longer.

What about online ADHD tests?

A free online ADHD test is a screening questionnaire. It can tell you whether a proper assessment is worth pursuing, and it cannot tell you whether you have ADHD.

Treat a positive result as a reason to look into it further, not as an answer. Most people who screen positive on a short questionnaire turn out, on proper assessment, not to have ADHD - which is exactly what a screening tool is designed to do.

How soon can you be seen?

Usually within weeks. The honest comparison is with NHS waits, which run to years in much of the country for adult ADHD.

If you can wait and the NHS route is open to you, that is a legitimate choice and we will say so. NHS Right to Choose may also be worth exploring before you pay for anything.

Want to talk it through first?

You do not have to book anything to ask a question. Our team will tell you what is involved, what it costs and how soon you could be seen.

See the detail on our ADHD assessment page, or get in touch and we will answer honestly; including if we think the NHS route suits you better.

Conclusion

An online ADHD assessment is the same clinical process delivered over video, and for most adults it is as reliable as being in the room. The exceptions are children and genuinely complex presentations.

If you are unsure which category you fall into, ask us before booking. It takes a few minutes and it is better than discovering it halfway through.
